Copenhagen, September 2019

Copenhagen was somewhere I was really excited to visit as I often hear brilliant things about it, although I have to say, I didn't fall in love with it as much as I thought I would. I felt like a lot of the places I wanted to visit seemed to be quite far apart and found it quite hard to find specific nightlife areas each evening. However, Nyhavn is just as picturesque as you'd imagine and despite the price, it's worth having a drink or two in some of the restaurants/bars there. It was freezing when we visited but you could still sit outside in the evening as all the outside areas were warmed up by heaters which meant you could still appreciate the beauty of the street. There are a lot of beautiful buildings to spot when walking around the city, and we also stumbled across some great food markets whilst exploring too which were great places to eat a more affordable dinner in comparison to some of the restaurants around. The best find became our morning breakfast spot, which was to die for - Meyers bakery. If you get a chance to go, make sure you try the kanelsnurrer, it's delicious.

Whilst exploring Copenhagen we did a walking tour across the city to get a bit of historical background for some of the buildings, and also visited an Amber museum which was really interesting and was on the second two floors of an Amber jewellery store right by Nyhavn. We also ticked off an obligatory visit to the Little Mermaid Statue and a lovely walk along the seafront. We would have loved to have visited the Tivoli Gardens amusement park but unfortunately, it was closed whilst we were there so we will have to save that for next time!

We also visited the infamous Christiania, a place where drugs are sold out in the open, but still not legally. There are strict rules not to run otherwise news spreads fast and people think the police are raiding them! It's an interesting place filled with amazing street art on every wall, but it definitely did feel a little odd in my opinion and I did feel a little out of place when I was walking around. After exploring the area we visited the Church of Our Saviour which has beautiful external winding stairs up to the top of the tower. The views were brilliant but the weather was very windy and rainy, so I felt really paranoid about slipping over the whole climb haha! Of course, we did both make it in one piece, with a camera full of photos and some legs that still felt like jelly about an hour after making it back to solid ground.

A day trip to Malmö, Sweden, is easily accessible by train and takes under an hour so it's well worth a trip if you are staying in Copenhagen for long enough that you can spare a day. I would say there overall there is more to do in Copenhagen when you compare the two cities but as the Tivoli Gardens was closed while we were there, it gave us the spare the time to venture out. In Malmö there appears to be a lot of building work going on but it feels very up and coming. We hired the Lime Scooters while we were there (they are so much fun!) and went down to the sea which, although it was incredibly windy and cold, was pretty beautiful and gave us a great view of the Turning Torso building.

If you need lunch spot suggestions in Malmö then I'd definitely recommend Lilla Kafferosteriet which we stumbled across. The food was delicious, with some great vegetarian options, and if I lived closer I would definitely be a returning customer! After lunch we had a quick look around St Peter's Church which was beautiful, especially because part of it still has some beautiful medieval paintings preserved on the ceiling and walls.
